Satellite & Cable

When satellite television first hit the market in the early 1990s, home dishes were expensive metal units that took up a huge chunk of yard space. In these early years, only the most die-hard TV fans would go through all the hassle and expense of putting in their own dish. Analogue
Preceding digital television (DTV), all televisions encoded pictures as an analog signal by varying signal voltage and radio frequencies. DTV is fast replacing analog TVs as digital broadcasting enables broadcasters to offer television with movie-quality picture and sound. Analog systems are more commonly known as NTSC systems.

why do we watch TV?

The Thinkbox study, Screen Life: TV in demand, suggests that the live television experience “satisfies human emotional needs that on demand viewing alone can’t”.

The study was based on an analysis of 100 hours of footage from 18 households and a diary study of 662 adults.

The researchers found six main reasons that people watch television: to unwind, for comfort, to connect, for an experience, to escape, or to indulge.

While there is much to be said for trying to understand why people watch television, rather than simply measuring how much they watch, reducing it to these six reasons seems rather simplistic.

Some services are only available in the UK, so even Americans can’t watch everything.

BBC iPlayer offers a variety of BBC television shows for free in the UK, including  he popular Doctor Who series. As with other services on this list, international users can also use this serives, too.the iPlayer has the previous 4 weeks television and also online only television which is kept up to date such as series releases online.

YouTube is a common destination for people looking for free TV shows online. You can find lots of free TV shows on YouTube. But let’s be honest – most free TV shows on YouTube are put up by users and not officially sanctioned. However, sometimes television networks put up free TV show episodes on YouTube.


YouTube offers a YouTube TV Shows page where you can watch TV online – watching shows that have been put up on YouTube legitimately. services provide pause and rewind on live television which has produced numerous funny occasions for myself .the providers that currently allow this to my knowledge are sky+ and virgin tevo .online websites allow more freedom as you can fast forward the program or content to where you want you can also leave it and come back to it later whilst simultaneously watching something else . 

the cons of this services are these products are expensive subscriptions and fitment fees that come with them they are also faults in corruption of the programs and the programming that deletes programs .

3D in the film and media industry 3D films like Avatar trick your brain, bringing images projected onto a flat cinema screen to life in full three dimensional glory.If you look at an object near you and close your left and right eyes in turn, you’ll see that each has a slightly different view of the world. Your left eye sees a bit more of the left side of the object, and your right eye sees a bit more of its right side. Your brain fuses the two images together allowing you to see in three dimensions. This is known as stereoscopic vision.

3D has been a buzzword in the technology industry for years. Ever since Avatar brought 3D cinema back into the public eye in 2009, there's been a resurgence of interest in 3D technologies.we're surrounded by 3D TVs (with and without glasses), 3D computer monitors, 3D video games, portable 3D games consoles like the Nintendo 3DS, 3D Blu-rays, 3D web streaming and even 3D sound. It seems like most of the major electronics companies are jumping on the 3D bandwagon.

 Pay per view

Pay per view provides a service by which a television audience can purchase events to view via private telecast. The broadcaster shows the event at the same time to everyone ordering it (as opposed to video-on-demand systems, which allow viewers to see recorded broadcasts at any time).  For example Sky sports use this for important sporting events. This offers a service where a television audience can purchase events to view via private telecast which is not shown for free.

This function is used so that audiences can pay for private broadcast to be viewed that wouldn’t normally been show on normal TV. This is done by using on screens guides (e.g. pressing the red button on SKY) or calling up the service provider. This is usually used for programmes such as sporting events like huge boxing matches pay per view has changed the way we view TV as it has given viewers control of what they watch and also the ability to enjoy first-run movies and special events at a time that is convenient for them. Also, unlike renting a movie from a video store, there is no movie to return and you pay no late fees. Producers can make more money form offering services to one off customers who do not have a subscription to their channel.

Digital recorders

A digital video recorder sometimes referred to by the “merchandising term personal video recorder is a consumer electronics device or application software that records video in a digital format to a disk drive, USB flash drive, SD memory card or other local or networked mass storage device.”(Google 13/02/13) The term includes set-top boxes with direct to disk recording facility, portable media players with recording, recorders as camcorders that record onto Secure Digital memory cards and software for personal computers which enables video capture and playback to and from a hard disk drive. The digital recorder is an important development in the television technology as it gives viewers more control and opportunities than the standard, older television remote control. Before digital recorders were developed many viewers had to use recording equipment such as VCRs where they could record their favourite television programs and films. The advantages of using a digital recorder is that generates better quality pictures than other recording devices such as a VCR, It is also much easier to use. Since the invention of digital recorders viewers have been able to pause, rewind and even record their favourite programs so they do not miss anything they are watching. Producers can gain more profit from digital recording as their audiences can record then watch their programs if there is a clash between two TV SHOWS. For examples in the weekend viewers that are watching the XFACTOR can still record Strictly Come Dancing and watch it later and it still register on the viewing record.

On demand viewing

On-demand viewing is essentially the ability to select from a library of stored content whenever viewers want and it is therefore completely controlled by the viewer and is not in any way dictated by the TV programme schedule for example, if you want to view on-demand content on your main TV set, you can decide what to choose. On-demand viewing (via streaming or downloading) is clearly a major part of most people's web behaviour, whether legal viewing from BBC iplayer for example, or illegal viewing web site that offer file shares. 40D is an on demand service which offers on demand viewing across different branches of channel 4 and viewers can view missed programs or even programs that was shown years ago. On demand viewing has definitely made it easier for viewers to view their missed programs. Producer gain profit on demand services through advertisement which viewers cannot skip and it generates different sponsorship deals for them.
